…. The Rock Hoppers Need You!
The club is still in need of four to five 5-gallon kegs of beer for NHC to
serve at Club Night [1] and during our/ exclusive time presenting /at the
Hospitality Suite [2]. To make the best impression, and to show others that
a/ club in its second year / can make an impact on the national homebrewing
scene, we would really like to see as many brews from as many people as
possible to truly represent the depth of the Rock Hoppers’ brewing skills.
If you donate a 5-gallon batch of beer, you will be eligible for some
/awesome /swag, including:
* A prize (from the AHA) for the people’s choice best West Coast IPA
* A prize (from the AHA) for the people’s choice best California Common
(Steam Beer)
* A hand-crafted maple mash paddle
* NHC gear – t-shirts, stickers, etc.
* A gift certificate to the Brew Hut
* …and much more
…. Myths and Facts
The thought came to mind that maybe some of our loyal Hoppers haven’t signed
up to brew for a variety of reasons. Here are some myths and facts about
participating:
*Myth: *You don’t think your beer is good enough.
*Fact: *You are a Rock Hopper, /nobody brews bad beer here/!
*Myth: *You brew extract-based beers and don’t think extract recipes belong
at NHC.
*Fact: *Adam Glaser’s barleywine that won 1st place at Dredhop was an extract
brew.
*Myth:* You don’t have the money for the ingredients (well, this really isn’t
a myth, but go with it here anyway)
*Fact:* If you sign up for the Big Brew, you’re off and running with 10
/free/ pounds of base grain! There are plenty of recipes that use little hops
(e.g., Scottish ales, dunkelweizen, wheat beer, many belgians), and dry yeast
is cheap!
*Myth: *You don’t have the time to brew and age a batch before NHC.
*Fact: *Smaller beers, especially ales, ferment and age quickly and will be
ready well before June 18.
*Myth: *You don’t brew big beer and that’s all that the Hoppers are taking to
NHC.
*Fact: *See above; smaller beers are welcome.
*Myth: *You don’t have the ability to keg.
*Fact: *Many Hoppers have stepped up and offered empty kegs to house your
brew – they will even come to your house and help you keg up the beer when
it’s ready to send to NHC.
*Myth: *You don’t have the motivation to brew because it messes up my house
too much, your wife hates it, etc.
*Fact: *You brew already, and, if need be, any one of our fine members with
systems would welcome you into their home to brew a batch. E-mail an officer
[3] and we’ll set you up to brew at a member’s house. Better yet, do it at
Big Brew on May 2!
So, with NHC brewing myths dispelled, and if you would like to participate in
sending a keg to NHC or to the Evanston Brew Festival later this year, please
get signed up on the website [4].
If you have problems for which no solution was posted, but still want to
brew, e-mail an officer [5] and we’ll work with you to get you brewing.
