Elections for officer positions will be held at the next RHBC meeting, taking
place on Thursday, March 8 at 6:45 PM at the Rockyard Dawghouse [1].

Each of the candidates has provided a short statement for your consideration.

…. Jim Denier

/Nominated for Education Director/

Should I be chosen to serve as an officer of the Rock Hoppers Brew Club, I
would welcome the opportunity to share my technical brewing knowledge and
experiences with the gang. My network in the brewing community would also
serve to benefit the club.

Highlights of my brewing passion:

* Homebrewer since 1993, having developed recipes and brewed well over 100
batches of most ale and lager styles. I’ve won numerous awards in local,
regional, and national homebrew competitions.
* Served as co-leader of Foam on the Range, the largest homebrew club in
Colorado.
* Judged over 50 local, regional, and national homebrew competitions as a
Certified Beer Judge under the Beer Judge Certification Program in 2004.

* Brewer at Dry Dock Brewing Co. from 2007-2009, involved in all aspects of
the brewing process.
* Received a brewing certification from the Siebel World Brewing Academy in
2009.
* Author a regularly featured article on homebrewing in the Rocky Mountain
Brewing News.
* My passion for brewing and good beer has drawn me into brewpubs and
breweries all over the Rocky Mountain region, the US, and abroad
(including Belgium, New Zealand, Chile, and Argentina).

…. Greg Geiger

/Nominated for Education Director and Communications Director/

I have been brewing 20 years and was part of the group that stated the Rock
Hoppers (my wife, Bridgette, and I host the Hop-oween Party annually). I
served as president of during 2009-10 and 2010-11. I have a few Best Of Show
wins (Dredhop, Big Beers, and Sam Adams Longshot), and am a BJCP ranked
judge. I have completed seven beer-soaked trips to Belgium. I also enjoy
romantic, moonlit walks on the beach and cozying up to a roaring fire.

.. As Education Director:

* I will provide concise yet informative presentations – mostly with
hands-on beer / ingredient tasting. No rambling on and on!
* If PowerPoint presentations are used they will be short with lots of
pictures and animation.
* I will provide intermittent style seminars to focus on a particular style
during meetings – and yes, tasting will be included!
* I will bring in industry experts.

.. As Communications Director:

* I will get that agenda put together for each meeting.
* I will keep the club organized for each meeting.
* I will recognize new meeting attendees.
* I will answer club e-mail inquiries.
* I will assist with mass-emails when needed.

.. As an Officer:

* I will help other officer positions – from competitions to events.
* I will attend officer meetings religiously. This is BIG!
* I will focus on executing what the club expects.
* I will continue to drink beer.

…. Geoff Humphrey

/Nominated for President and Competition Director/

I have been a brewer for a fairly long time, since my undergraduate days (the
beer was horrible but I didn’t care). However, wasn’t really passionate about
it until fairly recently. I credit my membership in the Rock Hoppers, with
its many inspiring members, in fueling my passion for this hobby. I’ve been
around from the beginning and have witnessed its growth into the premier club
in the state – heck, even the country. While we don’t have the numbers or the
longevity of other area clubs, we make up for it in enthusiasm, knowledge,
and talent.

.. As President:

Although I am extremely dedicated to the club and its members, I fear that my
other personal and professional commitments will prevent me from performing
the role as president as effectively as the membership deserves. As such, it
is with regret that I rescind my nomination as RHBC President for 2012-2013.

.. As Competition Director:

I will continue with the service that I have provided for all three years the
club has sponsored Biere de Rock, albeit in the Grand Poobah role. For each
of the three Biere de Rock competitions, I was responsible for all graphic
design projects (logo, fliers, posters, website, etc.) as well as organizing
registration and assisting in sorting entries. No matter what the outcome of
the elections on Thursday, I plan to be heavily involved in Biere de Rock for
years to come.

Outside of Biere de Rock, I am very involved in the competition scene in
Colorado and nationally. I was the judge coordinator and registrar for the
Big Beers Homebrew Competition in Vail this year and have already been asked
to repeat the role next year. I have earned the rank of Certified from the
BJCP and am a managing partner of Craft Beer U [2], an online craft beer
“school” that has provided BJCP exam education to over 250 students to date.
Finally, I have judged, volunteered, or participated in over 40 competitions
since 2009, and am the author of an internationally recognized and utilized
competition entry software program, Brew Competition Online Entry &
Management [3].

…. Izzy Kalinchuk

/Nominated for Event Director/

I have been in the Rock Hoppers since the first meeting and served as the
club’s first Event Director, where I organized a VIP tour of the Coors
Brewery, and tours of Great Divide, Wynkoop, and Stranahan’s Distillery.
Additionally, I put together meet ups at the Cheeky Monk, Rock Bottom, and
the Rockyard. I’ve got a lot of great ideas for future events, such as bus
tours of various breweries, in addition to carrying on with other RHBC
traditions like the Hop-o-ween party, Big Brew Day, Hop on the Green, etc.

…. Bryan Keas

/Nominated for Competition Director/

I have been homebrewing (off and on) for the last 14 years or so. I have been
a member of the Rock Hoppers for nearly three years and continue to be active
with the club. I enjoy participating in homebrew competitions both with
entering beers and judging. I have tested with the BJCP and have earned a
National level (pending judging points), so I plan to remain active this year
in attending and judging in several competitions. Finally, I volunteered to
do several tasks for Biere de Rock, the club sponsored competition last year,
including sorting, setup, cooking and food prep, and entering in information
on the software. Therefore, I am more than able to manage this year’s
competition.

Beyond the scope of helping to identify and place upcoming competitions on
the schedule and disseminate the results, I would also like to carry on some
of the past traditions such as the March Madness pool and the informal Buddy
Brew competition. In addition, I would also like to consider a football pick
’em style of pool and I also have some other ideas regarding internal
competitions that could be held within the club.

…. Steve Marquez

/Nominated for Communication Director/

I’ve been a homebrewer for around five years, and a member of the Rock
Hoppers for the past three years. Last year, I was elected to the position of
Competition Director and I feel my previous role prepared me for serving as
the Communications Director for our club in the coming year.

…. Dave McHugh

/Nominated for Treasurer/

I have been an RHBC member for four years and am the incumbent treasurer for
the last year. In this last year I have participated in our club events: NHC
in San Diego, our first annual RHBC golf tournament, and our own Biere de
Rock competition. I plan on participating in all of these events again this
year, including NHC in Seattle.

As treasurer, I have kept track of our funds and membership throughout the
year. One specific project I executed last year was to change our bank
account structure to reduce the bank fees to the club. I also make
suggestions to make PayPal better for the club and am working on a way to
accept debit/credit cards directly at club meetings for various fees. I am
dedicated to the success of this club and am very open to any and all
suggestions regarding club funds. Thank you for your vote.

…. Phil Penningroth

/Nominated for Treasurer/

I have been a homebrewer since 1996, an all-grain brewer since 2004, and
I enjoy brewing German lagers and ales, American pale ales and Belgian
ales. I own the Redpenny Brewery (my basement brewery) and enjoy the
club’s sharing and comparing of each others’ beers. Professionally, I have
been working in the Aerospace Industry for the past 30 years specializing in
the development of commercial and government satellites. I thoroughly enjoy
the camaraderie of the Rock Hoppers Brew Club and am truly impressed with the
quality of beer we submit to competitions. Dave McHugh has set the bar pretty
high but I am committed to being your treasurer for the next year and will do
a great job. Prost!

…. Kjell Wygant

/Nominated for President/

I want to thank Steve Marquez for nominating me for President of the Rock
Hoppers for 2012-13. The club has grown into a fully active team of
enthusiastic home brewing men and women, and I am very proud to have had a
hand in its inception. With a handful of us becoming Professional Brewers
and/or Professors of Brewing, we may very well have a key hand in shaping the
local Colorado craft brewing scene. It’s something to be proud of – something
every Rock Hopper should be proud to be part of. I look forward to what we
accomplish in 2012.

2012 is gearing up to be one of the most busy in my professional brewing
career. This is both exciting and extremely difficult, as making time for
such a role in my homebrew club is very important to me. As a full-time
brewer for the Rockyard, we are gearing up for a very active 2012 festival
season that is fast approaching. Couple that with carving out sufficient
family time, I do not think I’d be giving the club the undivided attention it
deserves.

Therefore, I am regretfully declining the nomination as RHBC President for
2012-2013.
