Belgian Dark Strong Barrel Brew – Please Sign Up

Hey everyone, so we have 54 days until the RIS barrel is ready to be emptied. The new barrel brew with the English Barleywine is still a go (specific logistics on that one to be determined), but after thought we decided the RIS barrel probably isn’t quite ready for it’s barrel home in the sky.

So, with the English Barrel going to Aaron’s house for safe keeping, I’ve convinced Jason the current barrel can remain in its home a little while longer. Because much of the oak/whiskey character has likely left the barrel, we have selected a Belgian Dark Strong as the brew to go in the current barrel (this was – I think – the 2nd highest vote getter in the poll but don’t quote me on that).

We need to have the BDS ready to go in the barrel when the RIS comes out. As Mike will blow a gasket if we push the tapping back, that means we have approximately 7 weeks to brew the BDS and get it ready. We’ll post the official recipe later this week [update: the recipe has been posted], with heavy inspiration likely coming from Geoff Humphrey’s award winning Blessed and Cursed Belgian Dark Strong.

If you would like to commit to participate in the BDS Barrel Brew, please sign up and then post a comment below with how much you will be brewing (5 or 10 gallons).

Accounting for the Angel’s share, we need 60 gallons to fill the barrel.

Free Sheet!

Anybody need bottles?  I’ve got three cases of 12 oz. bottles.  Most are Great Divide. They still have labels, but have been rinsed and are nice uniform bottles. Maybe someone needs contest bottles for the Dredhop?   De-labeling sure beats paying $10.00/case at the LHBS.

How about bottle cappers?  I’ve got one upright GL brand capper and three of those things that are just basically two handles with a cap-thing in between.  I call them neck breakers.  Maybe you are smarter than me and can get them to work.  Actually, sometimes I call them projectiles, ‘cuz there’s still a dent in the wall from when they earned the name “neck breakers”.

Anyway, I’m happy to donate these things to a worthy soul.  Or the garbage man.  Hell, I don’t care, I just gotta get rid of this sheet.  My loss, your gain. Actually my “I don’t give a krap, maybe someone can use this stuff before I throw it in the trash and bury it for eternity”. your gain.  Maybe gain.  Depends if you can get those neck breakers to work.

Anyway, email me or post, if you want to rescue any of my old brewery krap from the evil Waste Management dude. I’ll bring it to the next meeting. It will feel like adopting a new kitten, without the litterbox.  Really.

Is it a nut?

That brass thing in the bottom of tap handles that screws to the tap.  I saw one awhile back, and I think it was gnurled.  Does anybody know what it is called?  What thread size it is?  Where I can get one?  Any info would be welcome.

Can Can Can!

I am collecting cans for a special project. I would prefer good beer, anything from Oscar Blues or New Belgium, but I’m not going to be picky. If you have some cans that are empty and clean, let me know and I’ll come get them from you.

Castle Rock Oktoberfest

Just a heads up for anyone interested that there is an Oktoberfest in Castle Rock this Saturday from 11-6. It’s a pretty fun time for the whole family. Rockyard will be there and my company will have some shirts to sell. Stop by our booth. I’ll give all Rock Hoppers a half price shirt or Hoodie.
