June 2018: American-Style Session and Standard IPAs
IPA variants that are under 7.5% ABV. All entries should be true to the declared style. No wood-aged, fruit, funk, or spice variants for this quarterly comp.
- American IPA (BJCP 21A)
- Specialty IPAs (BJCP 21B):
- Juicy or Hazy [aka New England Style] IPA (BA Style)

September 2018: Iron Buddy Brew – Summer Ales
Our annual Iron Buddy Brew competition. As in years past, brewers newer to the club will be paired with veterans. Much like Iron Chef, each Iron Buddy Brew team will design and brew a beer in one of the styles listed below using a common secret ingredient and two or more double-secret ingredients. These ingredients will be chosen at random from limited lists at the June general meeting.
- Cream Ale (BJCP 1C)
- American Wheat (BJCP 1D)
- Kolsch (BJCP 5B)
- Weissbier (BJCP 10A)
- Blonde Ale (BJCP 18A)
- American Pale Ale (BJCP 18B)
- Fruit/spice/adjunct variants of any above style according to the Iron Buddy Brew guidelines
Here are the 2018 secret and double-secret ingredients as chosen at random by the Wheel of Destiny at the June meeting. Remember, all your chosen ingredients should be detectable in the finished beer.
- El Dorado hops
- Spelt
- Peaches
- Lemongrass
- Raspberries
- Watermelon
- Turbinado sugar
- Rose hips
- Cranberries

November 2018: Fantasy Brewing Draft Beers
Those participating in the RHBC Fantasy Brewing Draft will compete with their Fantasy “team” creations. The winner judged by a panel of experienced and BJCP judges will receive 70% of the Fantasy Brewing buy-in kitty, the runner up will receive 30%. Popular vote winner at the meeting will receive a special prize.
Participants must brew a beer with only the seven ingredients they drafted:
- 1 malt variety
- 1 hop variety
- 1 yeast variety
- 1 adjunct/spice/sugar/fruit
- 3 “flex” ingredients of any category (malt, hop, yeast, adjunct/spice/sugar/fruit)
Winners:
- 1st Place: Mike Bostwick with his German-style lager
- 2nd Place: Chris Egolf with his Saison with peaches
- People’s Choice: Mike Bostwick with his German-style lager
December 2018: Belgian- and French-Style Ales
In preparation for Biere de Rock and the Big Beers, Belgians, and Barleywines homebrew competition. All entries should be true to the declared style. No wood-aged, fruit, sour, funk, or spice variants for this quarterly comp.
